During the six day war between Israel and Arab Countries, an Israeli airplane took off with a nuclear payload. The plan crashed and the bomb became buried. The bomb is found years later by Nomads. From this point on the book and the film deviate drastically. In the film, Russian Neo-Nazi's buy the weapon and hire Russian scientists to turn it into a nuclear bomb which doesn't need to be dropped. The book has Islamist experts convert the bomb. The bomb is transported to America where the Superbowl is being/due to be played., ( Baltimore/Film and Denver/Book ). In the book, the CIA manage to track down the terrorists by holiday receipts and transport them to a third country for a quick execution. In the film, the CIA had discovered the bomb's existance but couldn't prevent it from going off. Jack discovers who the terrorists are and both Russian and American agents go after the terrorist leaders. The terrorists (both) had hoped to provoke a war between the two superpowers. It is alleged that Harrison Ford was originally going to reprise the role of Jack Ryan but he wanted the explosion to be prevented.
