The series revolves around a fictional U.S. Government agency known as C.T.U. (Counter-Terrorist Unit). F.B.I. and C.I.A. had refused the producers the right to use their organisations in the programme.
They're probably regretting it given how well the series is doing. Although not a Spy series in the same vein as Alias and Spooks, it has all the essential ingredients of one. You have a Government Agency,
terrorists and undercover agents. Each series deals with a different type of terrorist incident ranging from assassination to nuclear strikes.
The series is unique in that it is set in realtime 24 hours. Where in films, the whole incident could be hours in length but squashed into 2 hours. In the series, you see every minute of the day bar the adverts.
It has also spawned a lot of copycats in that it has split screen to show whats happening.
