| Jack Ryan in the books was a Professor of History who left education to pursue a different career. The stories follow him from being a desk analyst in 'The Hunt for Red October' through to being Assistant Director, then Director then finally President of the United States. The films take a disjointed chronology of his career. He becomes Deputy Director of the CIA in 'Clear and Present Danger' but then go back a younger Jack Ryan in 'The Sum of All Fears'. SOAF is dated after the events in CAPD. Jack doesn't use any gadgets that are more commonly associated with James Bond but works as part of a team to bring down the threat. In the books unlike all other secret agents, he is married to Cathy, a Medical Doctor and have a child.
